Raven’s Roost at Night

(Looks better if you click on it!)
Many of you may remember my “Buzzard’s Roost at night” image, taken at Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee (Seen below). Today, I’ve prepared a new similar image – “Raven’s Roost at Night”. This one was taken at the Raven’s Roost overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Lyndhurst, Virginia.
“Raven’s Roost at Night” is a combination of more than 160 photos, taken continually and merged together in post. The tree and the rocks were lit with a handheld flash fired manually several times from different locations. We are looking west in this image, so the stars appear to be streaking downward as they circle around the North Star, which is off to the right of the image. The colors in the sky is light pollution from nearby cities, reflecting into the clouds.
Hope you enjoy!
Stars Over Grandfather Mountain

Rough Ridge
/0 Comments/in Scenic/Landscape/Waterscape /by MalcolmOn the Blue Ridge Parkway one morning near Blowing Rock I stopped at one of the many overlooks. From the parking lot, you can hear water running from some small cascades. I looked up and could seed a part of this bridge through the trees so I headed up the trail to check it out completely.

Price Lake at Night
/0 Comments/in HDR, Night, Photo Adventures, Scenic/Landscape/Waterscape /by MalcolmPrice Lake at night. This was probably 11:30 at night, but the nearly full moon was so bright it lit the scene as though it were day.
This was taken as an HDR, but instead of changing the shutter speed, I adjusted the ISO in between each photo. Then the 6 resulting photos were merged.
Price Lake is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Blowing Rock, North Carolina

Flat Rock Sunset
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by MalcolmThis is a sunset from Flat Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail head is located on the parkway, just south of Linville, North Carolina. A brief hike to this view (probably not even a mile) was rewarded with amazing views to the west.
Sunset from Humpback Rock
/0 Comments/in HDR, Photo Adventures, Scenic/Landscape/Waterscape, Sunset/Sunrise /by MalcolmIf you look closely at nearly the center of the photo, there is an opening in the trees. That’s the Blue Ridge Parkway and the entrance to the parking area for the hike up to Humpback Rock. It’s quite a hike, 2 miles uphill the entire way. But they view at the top is worth every step. Both sunset and sunrise can be seen from the rocks.
The Blue Ridge Parkway
/4 Comments/in HDR, Photo Adventures, Scenic/Landscape/Waterscape, Sunset/Sunrise /by MalcolmI recently visited one of the most beautiful areas in the United State, Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. Much of the trip was spent on a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic road that goes from North Carolina through central Virginia. It is a beautiful drive and I encourage you to check it out!
Here are a few shots I got while on the parkway (all photos were taken near Boone or Blowing Rock North Carolina):
Thanks for looking!
