Fall in the Smokies

So this past Tuesday I went to the Smokies. I only had one day to devote to fall color in east Tennessee so I left my house at 3am in order to be in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by sunrise. I arrived at this vantage point around 30 minutes before sunrise. This shot encompasses 3 of my favorite things to photograph – East Tennessee, Sunrise, and Autumn

Sunset over Nashville

I was passing through Nashville this past Saturday evening so I decided to stop for a photo from the traditional location on the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge. While I think this location is a bit “overdone” for Nashville skyline photos, it works well in a pinch. It’s actually the first time I’ve shot from the bridge in quite a while. So here it is, the Nashville Skyline as the sun sets behind it and the lights reflecting in the Cumberland River.

Sunset from Humpback Rock

If you look closely at nearly the center of the photo, there is an opening in the trees. That’s the Blue Ridge Parkway and the entrance to the parking area for the hike up to Humpback Rock. It’s quite a hike, 2 miles uphill the entire way. But they view at the top is worth every step. Both sunset and sunrise can be seen from the rocks.

Nature’s Fireworks

So much is happening in this sky – amazing clouds, fog, color, even a rainbow. Just an awesome evening on Round Bald in the Roan Highlands

Last Light in the Roan Highlands

This is the last bit of light from the sun before it set behind heavy clouds and mountains. I loved the light shining across the grassy balds of the Roan Highlands. This was taken from on top of Round Bald, the first bald you get to after starting north on the Appalachian Trail from Carvers Gap.

The Golden Gate Bridge at Sunrise

Day two photo: The Golden Gate Bridge at Sunrise.

So I was so pumped about getting an awesome sunset at the Bay Bridge the night before, I decided to get up early and head to the Golden Gate Bridge for sunrise. I shot from another spot most of the morning, but the sunrise was pretty dull. There was lot’s of haze, no real fog and no real color in the sky. Since this was my only chance to shoot the bridge, I decided to continue up the hill stopping at various overlooks for different views. Finally made it up to this view as the sun was really shining through the haze, casting beautiful warm light onto the bridge and San Francisco behind it.

Details: This is a two horizontal shot panorama taken with a 100mm 2.8L lens, merged together in Photoshop. Each shot is only a single exposure.

Sunday Sunset – Panorama

Sunday Sunset - Panorama

Another panorama! Just like the last one, this is a 4 shot panorama (each a 7 exposure HDR). I was at home when I noticed the skies taking shape. Without much time to get to a more interesting spot, I headed to the farm field across from my house 🙂

I was in Nashville for an engagement session Sunday evening 4/29. Once we finished we shooting, I decided to wait around to see if the sunset would be nice….. It was 🙂
