Laurel Falls

I feel I’ve been in a bit of a photographic slump lately. I know that every outing can’t result in something amazing, but lately I’ve produced very little that I really like. It gets frustrating at times. So this past weekend, I decided to head out to a place that never disappoints, Roan Mountain, on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. Well, it was not good… For two days I was completely socked in by rain, ugly cloud cover and/or heavy fog. So I decided to head down the mountain and hike out to a waterfall that I’ve hiked to years ago. I tried to take several photos along the Appalachian trail on the way to the waterfall, but with the humidity at 100%, my lens fogged up completely every time I removed it from my bag. Getting even more frustrated, I was ready to turn back and head home but my son convinced me to keep going to at least see the waterfall. Finally we made it, and I guess the clearing in the trees allowed some of the humidity  to escape and my lens to defog. I was able to get this photo of Laurel Falls. My son and I were the only ones there for about 30-40 minutes. We ate lunch on the rocks, and enjoyed listening to the sound of the rushing water. Although this may not be a “wall hanger”, I guess it turned out to be a pretty good morning. One my son and I will remember for quite some time.

Middle Prong Little River

For some reason, shooting cascades is really tough for me. Finding the right composition does not come easy. I shot many cascades in the Tremont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that morning, several hours worth. And yet, I have only two to share. Once I would look at most of them on the computer screen, I didn’t like something about them. I guess I’ll just have to practice these more, and that means more trips to the mountains  🙂

Here is the other:

White Blaze

Any hikers out there recognize the white blaze? White blazes are used to mark the Appalachian Trail. This was taken on the AT on an incredible evening on Roan Mountain’s Round Bald

Colorful Layers

Mountains, Layers and Colors. You see these types of photos taken many times in the mountains, I always end up taking a few like this when I’m presented the opportunity. The first image was taken from the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, the last 4 from the  top of Roan Mountain in East Tennessee.

The last bit of light for the evening comes spilling across the mountains and valleys in the Roan Highlands on the Tennessee/North Carolina border.

Engine Gap Fog

I was so neat to stand up on Jane Bald and watch the clouds rolling in from the North Carolina side over to the Tennessee side. You can see the Appalachian trail in the photo coming down from Round Bald. It was such a beautiful morning to be up there!

You can purchase this photo HERE. Several others from East Tennessee are available there as well and more will be added soon.

Roan Mountain Sunset

I just got back in town from a weekend on Roan Mountain in east Tennessee. My son and I camped and hiked on a few miles of the Appalachian Trail. This is Friday’s sunset, looking east from Round Bald towards Jane Bald and Grassy Ridge. I absolutely love this part of Tennessee. The views are amazing and no picture I can take will do it justice. On the left is Tennessee, on the right is North Carolina. I’ll have more to post from these locations in the next few days…

Cades Cove 2011 – Landscapes

My family and I recently returned from a 3 day camping trip to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. What an absolutely beautiful place! Beautiful scenery and tons of wildlife. We did lot’s of hiking (the kids even did a 5 mile hike!) and lot’s of scenic cruising.

Just like I did last year after visiting the park, I’ll break the posts up into 2 parts: Landscapes and Wildlife.

Don’t forget, all my prints are discounted for the entire month of June (even these shots of Cades Cove!) Head on over to my storefront to browse and order your print!

Enjoy!

Sewanee – The University of the South

Last Saturday I met up with a few local photographers and headed down to Sewanee, Tennessee and the University of the South.

We were in search of fall color but came across All Saints’ Chapel. It was an amazing building with beautiful stained glass windows and awesome architecture. The photos don’t even begin to represent just how incredible it was.
