Radnor Lake Sunrise

So while I was in Nashville, I stopped by an old favorite place – Radnor Lake. It’s been almost a year since I was last able to visit. This was what greeted me Monday morning – just how I remembered it 😉

LeConte Cabin at Night

Almost the entire time that I was on Mt LeConte we were engulfed in a cloud/fog/mist/rain. By chance, my young daughter woke me around 4:30 because she had to go to the bathroom. I got up to take her to the bathrooms (they are separate from the cabins) and as soon as we stepped outside, we both looked up in awe. It was so crystal clear, and there were so many  stars visible. After I got her back in bed, I grabbed my camera and went back out. It only lasted for about 10-15 minutes after getting my camera, but I had enough time to take this photo of our cabin with the incredible night sky overhead. Soon the stars were gone and we were back in the fog, and all the “normal” people who were sleeping at 4:30am missed it…

 

How the cabin is lit: Directly behind me was the dining hall. There were already several people working there that morning with a couple of lanterns. The rest of the light is coming from Gatlinburg, far below but visible from the lodge.

Laurel Falls

I feel I’ve been in a bit of a photographic slump lately. I know that every outing can’t result in something amazing, but lately I’ve produced very little that I really like. It gets frustrating at times. So this past weekend, I decided to head out to a place that never disappoints, Roan Mountain, on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. Well, it was not good… For two days I was completely socked in by rain, ugly cloud cover and/or heavy fog. So I decided to head down the mountain and hike out to a waterfall that I’ve hiked to years ago. I tried to take several photos along the Appalachian trail on the way to the waterfall, but with the humidity at 100%, my lens fogged up completely every time I removed it from my bag. Getting even more frustrated, I was ready to turn back and head home but my son convinced me to keep going to at least see the waterfall. Finally we made it, and I guess the clearing in the trees allowed some of the humidity  to escape and my lens to defog. I was able to get this photo of Laurel Falls. My son and I were the only ones there for about 30-40 minutes. We ate lunch on the rocks, and enjoyed listening to the sound of the rushing water. Although this may not be a “wall hanger”, I guess it turned out to be a pretty good morning. One my son and I will remember for quite some time.

 

Nashville at Night with a Barge

So I was finally able to get out to shoot a little this past weekend with a friend. We headed to the classic Nashville spot and grabbed a few photos. You should check out his photo of the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge 

 

 

College Grove Methodist Church

I headed out a couple of days ago in search of a good night photo. I ended up in College Grove, where this beautiful church is. I’ve passed it before, so I’ve thought about a night shot. The problem was the street lights in front and to the side. I had to shoot from this angle to block the one on the side. Overall, I think it turned out pretty well. This is approximately 45 minutes worth of 30 second exposures, blended to show the motion of the stars.
