Located on Edisto Island, South Carolina – Botany Bay Plantation offers access to a portion of the beach that was once a forest of large trees. The trees are dead, but the many remains litter the beach. This is one of the most photographed trees on the beach.
This is a long exposure, captured shortly after sunrise with a neutral density filter. I will have more photos of some of the other trees soon!
Got up reeeeaaaaallllllyyyy early one morning and headed to the beach. Made it in time for sunrise 🙂
The main image is my favorite from the morning. I found this location just by looking around on google maps. I knew I would have to wait for low tide to be at the lowest around sunrise. I also needed decent weather/no rain. I finally got that combination yesterday, so I was up at 4am and headed to North Topsail Beach. I would have liked to have been there a little earlier, but I arrived just before the sun was coming up over the horizon.
Same morning, other versions:
This one was photographed a little later than the others. The sun was much higher in the sky, which is why the colors are so different. I used a 10 stop filter to get the motion in the water.
So while I was in Nashville, I stopped by an old favorite place – Radnor Lake. It’s been almost a year since I was last able to visit. This was what greeted me Monday morning – just how I remembered it 😉
This is the Washington Monument at sunrise, as seen from the Lincoln Memorial. There were very few people out that early in the morning, it was pretty nice 🙂
Behind me:
After shooting here, I headed on over to the Capitol Building to get a shot of it while it too was quiet. This is a 6 shot panorama:
The day before, I took in a baseball game at Nationals Park on a perfect afternoon for baseball:
A couple of days ago, I got to ride around and explore the southern coast of North Carolina with my aunt and photographer, Marianne – check out her work to see fantastic black and white long exposures
This is a photo of the Johnny Mercer Pier in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina at sunrise.
So this past Tuesday I went to the Smokies. I only had one day to devote to fall color in east Tennessee so I left my house at 3am in order to be in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by sunrise. I arrived at this vantage point around 30 minutes before sunrise. This shot encompasses 3 of my favorite things to photograph – East Tennessee, Sunrise, and Autumn
The title says it all 🙂

Day two photo: The Golden Gate Bridge at Sunrise.
So I was so pumped about getting an awesome sunset at the Bay Bridge the night before, I decided to get up early and head to the Golden Gate Bridge for sunrise. I shot from another spot most of the morning, but the sunrise was pretty dull. There was lot’s of haze, no real fog and no real color in the sky. Since this was my only chance to shoot the bridge, I decided to continue up the hill stopping at various overlooks for different views. Finally made it up to this view as the sun was really shining through the haze, casting beautiful warm light onto the bridge and San Francisco behind it.
Details: This is a two horizontal shot panorama taken with a 100mm 2.8L lens, merged together in Photoshop. Each shot is only a single exposure.
Late last week I had to head into Nashville early so I decided to stop to get a few shots of the city. I realized I completely lucked out just as I was parking. I quickly headed to the banks of the Cumberland River and this is what happened:
Typically, this is a great spot to shoot the sunset but there was so much color in the sky from the sunrise this morning that it stretched all the way into the western sky. The above photo is a 6 shot panorama. Each is a 3 exposure HDR. The photos were merged into HDR using Photomatix and then merged into panorama using Photoshop.
Once the sky died down a bit and the sun came up more it cast some beautiful orange light on the buildings:
I have another shot from this morning that I will be using for another full tutorial over on SOHDR.com – check it out if you are interested in learning HDR!
